Eknaligoda disappearance: Suspects moved to Giritale Army Camp

Police say the suspects who were arrested over the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda have been moved to the Giritale Army Camp for further investigations.

A communique issued by the Police Media Unit notes that the suspects will be moved to the army camp in the period between October  3 – 14, following a court order which was obtained on September 28.

The Crimes Investigation Division has detained eleven suspects over the disappearance of Journalist Eknaligoda so far, for questioning.

Turkey ‘intercepts’ Russian jet violating its air space

Turkish F-16 fighter jets have been scrambled after a Russian warplane violated Turkey’s air space on Saturday, the foreign ministry says.

The Russian fighter plane “exited Turkish airspace into Syria” after being intercepted, the ministry said.

The Turkish foreign minister has spoken to his Russian counterpart, as well as ministers from other Nato countries.

Russia has been carrying out air strikes in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

The Russian embassy in Ankara said a Russian plane did violate Turkish airspace, and Russia has “explained it” to Turkey, Russian news agency Interfax reports.

A Kremlin spokesman in Moscow did not confirm the incident however, saying:'”Our ambassador was called to the foreign ministry and given a note, which mentions certain facts, which will be checked.”

The Russian air campaign began on Wednesday with Moscow insisting it was targeting Islamic State (IS) positions. But Syrian activists say Russian planes have also targeted other Syrian groups opposed to President Assad.

Nearly 26 injured as car ploughs into crowd at Malta car show

At least 26 people were injured on Sunday (October 4, 2015) after a car smashed into a group of spectators at a motor show in Luqa, Malta.

The Porsche 918 Spyder, driven by a British businessman, appeared to spin out of control as he was driving at high speed along an airport runway used for the event.

Paul Bailey has been named as the driver of the supercar and is still in hospital along with others, five of whom are said to be in critical condition, including a six-year-old girl.

Eyewitness video filmed by a spectator shows the car losing control before spinning, crashing through a barrier and into a crowd.

Injured people are seen on the ground and one person appears to be wedged between two damaged vehicles.

Maltese Parliamentary Secretary, Chris Fearne, said some of the injured suffered severe head injuries, multiple fractures and abdominal injuries among others and psychologists were helping the victims, the Times of Malta reported.

An eyewitness also told the Times of Malta one of the car’s back wheels touched the grass which caused it to spin.

Photos of Thurston and daughter’s doll on the field goes viral on social media

A dark-skinned doll brought on to the pitch at the end of the Australian Rugby League final has become the talking point of the game.

The doll was carried by the daughter of Johnathan Thurston, captain of the winning team, North Queensland Cowboys.

Thurston is an indigenous Australian, as was, for the first time in the league’s history, his counterpart, Justin Hodges of the Brisbane Broncos.

It has been seen by many as a moment of inclusion and diversity.

Australian sport, in particular Aussie Rules football, has been marred by racism against indigenous players.

The country has also seen heated discussion on whether it should recognise indigenous people in its constitution, and repeal clauses that prevent people of a certain race from voting and allow laws to be made based on race.
